In Transit: Part VI (A Collaboration)

We continue on this Maundy Thursday with our collaboration between Tom Darin Liskey’s photography and my words. Maundy (or Holy) Thursday is the day Christians around the world commemorate Jesus’ Last Supper with his disciples and the washing of their feet. On this occasion, Jesus commanded his disciples to “Love one another as I have loved you” (John 13:34).

XI. Aisle

You run a highway of
curved reflection – all
memory and regret,
hope and vision – in your
few measured steps
to Communion.

XII. At the Door

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERABought groceries today.
They had set up a system
making us stand six feet apart
before they let us in – only
so many in the store at a time,
and as I walked through the door,
I felt like this guy looks –
panicked – and not about
toilet paper or if they’d run out
of canned soup or ground beef,
or bananas, but wondering if
I’d run out of time, has the world
run out of time, run out of grace,
out of second chances.
It was serious. So instead
of buying milk – or only milk –
which was the plan, I bought
two pints of Ben & Jerry’s, and
a bag of snickerdoodles and
other rough comforts for my
sorry soul, my salve for this tired
old chewed-up tennis ball
of a planet. This place at the door,
neither in nor out, alone,
it’s who we become when
we forget why we came,
what it’s all about, and mostly
Who sent us.
