Moderation: An Ode (of sorts)

Be reasonable. Stay within
proper limits. Not extreme,
excessive, intense: A definition
encircling a curse, moderation

unfreedoms me. And yet
this chain that binds also links
to past, to memory,  to some
other, an echo from my youth:

Moderation in all things,
balance left with right.
We accept and applaud,
We strike the bell, silence

the pauper until we are all mimes
pushing against the invisible wall,
not stalling, not racing, just pushing
against elemental forces, pushing

back the inevitability: inertia
and gravity pair against poets, keep us
in check, keep us moderated. Yet
in our excess, we moderate the world.
